Met zes Oscars, waaronder Beste Film en Beste Regie, werd The Hurt Locker van Kathryn Bigelow de grote winnaar van de 82e Academy Awards. Bigelow is de allereerste vrouw met een Oscar voor Beste Regie.
Beste Acteur werd Jeff Bridges voor Crazy Heart en de hoofdrol van Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side leverde haar de Oscar voor Beste Actrice op. Grote verliezer van de avond was Avatar, die met ’slechts’ drie Oscars naar huis ging.
